With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, love, chocolate and naked babies are everywhere. What better way to get into the holiday spirit then to celebrate some of the greatest movie quotes that consistently make me and my fat cat swoon. These are all the quotes that my wasted heart will love, until I look this:

Now, to quote Liam Neeson, “Let’s go get the shit kicked out of us by love.”
35. I see you’re drinking one percent. Is that ’cause you think you’re fat? ‘Cause you’re not. You could be drinking whole if you wanted to. – Napoleon Dynamite
There is nothing more romantic than a boy telling you to go ahead and drink the whole milk because you’re not fat. Nothing. Except maybe the next 34 movie quotes.
34. Me and Jenny goes together like peas and carrots. – Forrest Gump
Though this quote represents the innocence and love of a first childhood friendship, it went on to encompass everything that Forrest and Jenny would later become to each other. No matter what happened to these two in life, they always came back to each other, because like Forrest said, they got along like peas and carrots.
33. Jake: Happy Birthday, Samantha. Make a wish.
Sam: I can’t. It already came true. – 16 Candles
16 Candles is the classic John Hughes film about a girl whose family completely forgets about her 16th birthday. To make matters worse, Sam is crushing on the most popular guy in school, Jake Ryan who doesn’t even know she’s alive; or so she thinks. Turns out he does know who she is and spends the entire movie trying to get in touch with her. In the final scene of the movie, the two FINALLY meet. Not only does Sam get the guy, but someone who knew it was her birthday. As they adorably share the cake, he asks her to make a wish. She said it already came true, AND THEN THEY KISS. It’s perfect and adorable and teen romance at it’s finest.
32. Sandra: But you don’t even know me.
Edward: I have the rest of my life to find out. – Big Fish
Big Fish is the epic tale of one son trying to figure out the truth behind his dying father’s stories. Though his father recounts to him tales of great adventure, it’s the love story shared between his father and his mother that becomes the heart of the film. His parent’s story begins with his father stating “Your mother was never supposed to marry me. She was engaged to somebody else.” From there we see one of the best stories of love at first sight unfold.
31. Sam: I love you, Molly. I’ve always loved you.
Molly: Ditto. –Ghost
Molly and Sam were a happy couple in love, who could have incredibly hot pottery sex at the drop of a hat. Molly would always tell Sam she loved him, and he would respond with the endearing yet equally frustrating word, ‘ditto.’ Then Sam dies, becomes a ghost and hunts down the man who murdered him. In the final moments of the film when the two can finally communicate with each other, Sam before moving on, finally tells Molly that he loves her. She responds by simply telling him, ‘ditto.’ It’s sweet, playful, ironic and absolutely perfect.
30. Mark Darcy: I like you, very much.
Bridget: Ah, apart from the smoking and the drinking, the vulgar mother and… ah, the verbal diarrhea.
Mark Darcy: No, I like you very much. Just as you are. – Bridgette Jone’s Diary
For the larger part of the film, Bridgette Jones disliked Mark Darcy. She thought he was arrogant and rude (apparently a common misconception for Colin Firth) and spent a good portion of the film dating his arch nemesis. However, as great romantic comedies can do, it became apparent to everyone that these two were so wrong for each other, that they were actually right. It’s never more apparent then when Mark tells Bridget he likes her, just the way she is.
29. Celine: Baby, you are gonna miss that plane.
Jesse: I know. – Before Sunset
In the first film Before Sunrise, Jesse and Celine, two strangers, meet on a train and spend the rest of the evening together, talking and falling in love. At the end of the film though, they go their separate ways. But nine years later in the sequel Before Sunset, the two meet up again for one afternoon, to see if what they had could really work. In the final moments of the film with the time limit up for their afternoon, the two walk back to Celine’s apartment. As they laugh and dance together she says, ‘Baby you’re gonna miss that plane.’ He smiles and says ‘I know.’ End of movie. After two films spanning over nine years, Jesse and Celine finally get together and it’s not with a passionate kiss or an extraordinary declaration of love. It’s just a simple acknowledgement between the two. They are not leaving each other this time.
28. Listen to me, mister. You’re my knight in shining armor. Don’t forget it. You’re going to get back on that horse and I’m going to be right behind you, holding on tight and away we’re going to go, go, go! – On Golden Pond
Two of the greatest film stars of all time, Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda got together in the last years of their careers to film a beautiful movie that showcased love in it’s older years. It’s a rare feat in an age and beauty obsessed Hollywood. Though married for many years, the characters have been struggling of late due to Norman’s memory loss. In a particularly heartbreaking moment, Ethel calms him down by reminding him that he is her knight in shining armor and she needs him. Even after all this time, she still imagines them as a young knight and princess. It’s exactly what he needs to hear and his episode passes. On this list of extraordinary couples and moments, this glimpse of realism shines.
27. “I love you. I knew it the minute I met you. I’m sorry it took so long for me to catch up. I just got stuck.” – Silver Linings Playbook
After a brief stint in a mental institution, Pat comes out obsessed with getting his old life back, including his ex wife Nikki. He wants to show her that he’s changed, so he enters a dance competition with Tiffany, a widower with many problems of her own. As the two train together it becomes clear to everyone except Pat that he and Tiffany belong together. He is still hell bent on getting Nikki back. However when Tiffany and Nikki are finally in the same room together, he realizes where his heart truly lies, his dance partner Tiffany. He tells her he loves her and apologizes for getting stuck. It’s the perfect thing to say because it’s such an easy thing to do, get lost or stuck. This quote and movie proves though, that finding a new way is possible.
26. Professor Albus Dumbledore: After all this time?
Professor Severus Snape: Always. – Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part II
Technically this is a book quote, but in the words of my generation #SorryNotSorry. There once was a boy named Severus Snape who loved only one thing in this world, Lily Potter. He was her best friend, though he always wanted more. His world fell apart when he insulted Lily in public and their friendship fell to pieces. Though she went on to marry his worst enemy, Severus never stopped loving her. Years later, when the wizard he was working for killed Lily, Severus switches sides, and aligns himself with Albus Dumbledore. When he asks Severus why the change in heart, Snape casts his Patronus spell, to reveal a doe, the same as Lily’s. Dumbledore, amazed, looks at Snape and asks ‘After all this time?’ to which Snape responds with the word that launched a 1,000 Tumblr ships, ‘Always.’ Severus never had Lily, never once kissing her or telling her how he felt. But that never stopped him from loving her.
25. I just slid my ticket across the table, and I said, “Sorry, guys; I gotta see about a girl. – Good Will Hunting
“I gotta see about a girl” is an incredibly simple yet endearing phrase that just seems to represent a lot in the film Good Will Hunting. It’s first used by therapist Sean Maguire when describing how he met his future wife to his patient Will Hunting. Maguire just knew he met his girl, and left his friends to go meet her. It’s an emotional understanding that Hunting lacks. It takes Hunting the entire film to realize that for all the intelligence he possesses, he is just as scared and lonely as the rest of us. In the last scene of the film, Hunting blows off the most important meeting of his life to win back the woman he loves. He apologizes to Maguire by writing a note. It simply states, ‘Sorry, I had to go see about a girl.’ Hunting finally learns to love, and Maguire couldn’t be prouder.
24. Loretta, I love you. Not like they told you love is, and I didn’t know this either, but love don’t make things nice – it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren’t here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and *die*. The storybooks are *bullshit*. Now I want you to come upstairs with me and *get* in my bed! – Moonstruck
After Loretta gets engaged to Johnny, she admits to her mother that she does not love him. She believes the marriage will be easier that way. However when her fiance goes back to Italy, Loretta meets his brother Ronny, who immediately takes her to bed. She realizes her error and tries to stay away from him but Ronny, who really does love her, takes her to the Opera. When their date is over, Ronny delivers this beautiful speech, which showcases a different kind of love. Rarely is it looked at as something that ruins everything, but in a way he’s right. To err is human, and their love has deep consequences. But that’s what makes this speech and these characters so real. After that speech, she gets in his bed. She then breaks off her engagement the next morning.
23. I will return. I will find you. Love you. Marry you. And live without shame. – Atonement
An intimate moment shared between Robbie and Cecilia changes their lives forever as the two realize in the same instant that they love each other. Later that night they consummate their new relationship and admit their feelings for the first time to each other. Yet the night concludes with Robbie being arrested for a rape he did not commit. The two are torn apart from the perfect beginning they had created. As Robbie is forced into a police car he screams at Cecilia that he will return and marry her without shame. It’s simple and beautiful. The rest of the movie is watched in the hopes that he will be able to keep that promise. The tragic beauty is that he never could.
22. I am in love with you. And I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed. And that one day all our labor will be returned to dust. And I know that the sun will swallow the only earth we will ever have. And I am in love with you. – The Fault In Our Stars
Nothing says the perfect love story quite like two kids meeting in a Cancer Support Group. After meeting in the support group, Hazel and Augustus spend all of their free time together. The two share a love of reading, a familiarity of hospitals and an unparalleled wit matched no where else in literature and screen. It’s only a matter of time before Augustus, a master of words and his emotions declares his love for Hazel in the way only he can: intellectually, earnestly, and sweetly with a dash of cynicism. Though their love story ends with how you would expect two teens who met in a cancer support group to, their story is never diminished to being just a tragedy. It’s quotes and moments like this that prove how much life there is in dying.
21. I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme. I hate it, I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call. But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all. – 10 Things I Hate About You
The film, based off Shakespeare’s classic play Taming of the Shrew, opens with Patrick being paid to take Kat out on a couple of dates to essentially tame her. However like any good romantic comedy, the two begin to fall for each other. Just at the height of her feelings for Patrick, she learns that he was paid to take her out and is devastated, not realizing that he had actually fallen for her as well. A few days, Kat has to present her poem to the class, including Patrick. She starts out by listing the ten things she hates about him. As she reads the poem her emotions become heightened as the things she’s listing aren’t negatives at all. When her last I hate you turns into, ‘I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close, not even a little, not at all,’ she is inconsolable and runs from the room. It’s the first time she’s admitted her feelings to him and she bravely does it in front of her entire class. While the poem itself is written to perfection, it’s the last line that hits home. We’ve all loved someone like that, someone we should hate but don’t.
20. “No, you submit, do you hear? You be strong, you survive… You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you.” – Last Of The Mohicans
Alright, I admit it. This quote is probably farther down the list then it should be because it conjures up the imagery of Daniel Day Lewis running through the forest like this one. Anywhos, Hawkeye a white man adopted by Mohican chief, Chingachgook, gets involved in the French and Indian War with after saving two British sisters from a raiding party. While escorting them to a nearby fort, Hawkeye begins to love one of the sisters, Cora. Though she is supposed to marry a British officer, she falls for Hawkeye as well. When the fort gets attacked, the two have to flee for their lives. While they are hiding under a water fall they realize the only way they can escape is if Hawkeye leaves to get aid. His romantic declaration of promising to find her no matter how long it took, left many people (myself included) wishing they were actress Madeline Stowe.
19. If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you. – Winnie-the-Pooh
Perhaps the greatest bromance in history, is that between a little boy and his stuffed bear. No, I am not talking about Ted. Obviously I am referring to the delightful love between Christopher Robin and his bear Winnie the Pooh. This quote said by Pooh to Christopher Robin and encompasses everything their relationship was, sweet, innocent and loving.
18. I might be the only person on the face of the earth that knows you’re the greatest woman on earth. I might be the only one who appreciates how amazing you are in every single thing that you do, and how you are with Spencer, “Spence,” and in every single thought that you have, and how you say what you mean, and how you almost always mean something that’s all about being straight and good. I think most people miss that about you, and I watch them, wondering how they can watch you bring their food, and clear their tables and never get that they just met the greatest woman alive. And the fact that I get it makes me feel good, about me. – As Good As It Gets
This is the longest quote on my list. Every time I tried cutting it though, I just couldn’t. Everything in this speech is wonderful and needs to be read and reread. Jack Nicholson’s character Melvin is a cantankerous horrible lonely old author in the film As Good As It Gets. Despite being a terrible person, he has one positive in his life, waitress Carol played by Helen Hunt. Carol is the epitome of a saint, being a single mom to her chronically ill son, Spencer. Yet as the two spend more and more time together, sparks fly. They constantly challenge the other to their breaking point, but always find their way back to each other. . The whole movie though, Carol and audiences alike wonder if he has changed enough to win her. In this moment when he gives this speech, everyone realizes that he has. With this quote, he can finally get the girl.
17. Nobody puts Baby in a corner. – Dirty Dancing
“That was the summer of 1963. When everybody called me Baby, and it didn’t occur to me to mind. That was before President Kennedy was shot, before the Beatles came, when I couldn’t wait to join the Peace Corps, and I thought I’d never find a guy as great as my dad.” Thus begins Dirty Dancing the story of growing up, romance and dirty dancing. When Baby falls in love with her resort’s dance instructor Johnny. However when their relationship is made public, Johnny is fired and has to leave the premises. It seems like her first love is gone, however he triumphantly returns in the middle of the talent show. Johnny declares to the audience and Baby, who had been sitting at a table in the back of the room, that ‘nobody puts Baby in a corner.’ He then sweeps her up and gives her the final dance the couple deserved. By coming back for her he proved that she hadn’t made a mistake by choosing him. He also showed everyone just how special Baby really was.
16. I wish I knew how to quit you. – Brokeback Mountain
Apparently 1963 was the year to set heartbreaking love stories . Brokeback Mountain also takes place in the summer of 1963, though it does not feature a delightful romp between a young girl and her dance instructor. This groundbreaking film depicts two male cowboys who fall in love while working together, and how they deal with that love for the rest of their lives. Twenty years after their first encounter, the two get into a heated argument and Jack says, “I wish I knew how to quit you.” Their lives would have been so much simpler if the two had been able to walk away from each other but they never could. They loved each other too much. They could bring out the worst in each other, not communicating for years at a time, getting into physical fights, cheating, but they always came back to each other.
15. I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone. – Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Arwen, an immortal elf, falls in love with a mortal human king. Faced with the prospect of either having immortality with her elf culture, or one lifetime with Viggo Mortensen, she obviously picks the long haired hunk. This quote is the moment she tells him she would rather die with him than live forever without him.
14. Jack: Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me… it brought me to you. And I’m thankful for that, Rose. I’m thankful. You must do me this honor. Promise me you’ll survive. That you won’t give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.
Rose: I promise.
Jack: Never let go.
Rose: I’ll never let go, Jack. I’ll never let go. – Titanic
Jack and Rose were the doomed lovers who met and fell in love on the Titanic. When the ship hits the iceberg, the two do their best to survive the disaster together. But James Cameron is evil. He even begs her to survive and continue fighting. In his last moments on Earth, all Jack can do is think of Rose and how to comfort her.
13. What is it you want, Mary? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey. That’s a pretty good idea. I’ll give you the moon, Mary. – It’s A Wonderful Life
Mary always had a crush on George Bailey, but he never noticed her, until one fateful school dance where he was forced by a friend to dance with his little sister. She was, of course Mary, who was now all grown up. The two share an adorable dance together, before George walks her home. It’s their first time alone together, and their chemistry and feelings become apparent to both of them. It’s then that George is inspired to lasso the moon for his new sweetheart. Though their time is interrupted by George’s ailing father, the two never quite forget that moment.
12. So, it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day. – The Notebook

The two are reunited seven years later, only this time Allie is getting married to someone else. She believes her relationship with Duke is over, though he has other ideas. Desperate to keep her, he says the above beautiful quote to convince her to stay. She stayed, Ryan Gosling became a star, and kissing in the rain was the new standard for kissing.
11. You will never age for me, nor fade, nor die. – Shakespeare in Love
Perhaps the most famous love story ever written, is that of Romeo and Juliet by playwright William Shakespeare. So what served as the inspiration to the greatest love story ever told? That’s what Shakespeare in Love tries to figure out. Shakespeare is experiencing the worst writer’s block of his career when he meets Viola, and everything becomes clear. Though he’s married, and she’s engaged to a lord, their love serves as the inspiration to his new play Romeo and Juliet. When those obstacles become too much though, the two must part, however not before Shakespeare says these swoon worthy words to her. They are even more powerful knowing that as a writer, he did have the power to immortalize her forever, just the way she was.
10. Love means never having to say you’re sorry. – Love Story
Oliver and Jenny meet at college, and though they are complete opposites in every way, they can’t help but fall in love. The two eventually become engaged though Oliver’s parents threaten to cut him off if he marries her. They decide their love is worth it and they get married despite their difficult start. During a fight Oliver gets angrier than usual. He eventually apologizes to her and she says the words that have entered the pop culture sphere ever since. Love means never having to say you’re sorry. The two reconcile and move on and continue their love story. Nobody is perfect, but loving someone in spite of their flaws is about as special as it gets.
9. You have bewitched me, body and soul. – Pride and Prejudice
When Mr. Darcy first meets Elizabeth Bennett, he looked down on her because of her large family coinciding with their small income, even insulting her in public. However as their story progresses, it becomes obvious that the two were wrong about each other, and they belong together. Two marriage proposals later, Elizabeth finally accepts. Mr. Darcy looks at her and tells her, ‘You have bewitched me body and soul.’ As a wealthy man, Darcy could have married anyone, but he chose Elizabeth, not because she was beautiful but because she was interesting and intelligent. The one person that completed him and challenged him to be a better man. And he loved for it.
8. Princess Leia: I love you.
Han Solo: I know. – Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
She was a princess and he was a smuggler. In normal circumstances the two would never have met. However their world and planets came under attack, which forced these polar opposites to work together. Their first moments shared are of extreme bickering and hatred, however when they were both forced save their world, a mutual respect began to form. In the second Star Wars film, their relationship took a different turn again, as respect turned into love. But nothing is ever easy for this pair and Han is sentenced to death. As he is about to be executed Leia screams “I love you.” It’s the first time either one has ever acknowledged their feelings. Solo with only moments to spare responds with the perfect phrase for his character and the relationship, “I know.” Han, with only seconds left, decided to comfort his woman, not by telling her that he loved her too, but rather that everything was okay, because he knew. He knew that she loved him.
7. Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while. – The Princess Bride

Years later when she is forced into an engagement, she is unexpectedly kidnapped by a mysterious man in black. He turns out to be none other than her true love Wesley. Heartbroken, he asks why she didn’t wait for him. She replies that he was dead. Wesley than utters, “Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.” Not all couples get the happy ending they deserve. Sometimes death gets in the way, but as Wesley reminds us, it’s not the end. It only delays the love for a little bit.
6. But for now, let me say – Without hope or agenda – Just because it’s Christmas – And at Christmas you tell the truth – To me, you are perfect – Love Actually
Maybe this quote is a little higher up on this list than it should but it’s Christmas time and everything is more romantic then.
5. After all… I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her. – Notting Hill

Anna comes back to the bookshop and once again tries to rekindle their romance. He is again wary of her fame getting in the way. Anna then reminds him that past all the fame, she is just a girl who loves him. It’s sweet and vulnerable and becomes the catalyst for their happy ending.

He flies home immediately and says hello to Dorothy before launching into an epic monologue about how sorry he is and how much loves her. Once he finishes she runs to him and simply says to him, you had me at hello. She loved him all this time and forgave him the moment she saw him.
3. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. – When Harry Met Sally
Harry and Sally attempted to answer the age old question, can men and women be just friends. Harry said no, and his friend Sally set out to prove him wrong. Over the course of ten years, Sally wins the bet as the two eventually become best friends. However, it is eventually Harry who has the epiphany that the woman he’s been looking for his whole life is actually the one he’s been friends with. He rushes to tell her and initially she is confused as to why he is there. He sweetly states the above quote. No matter how many times I’ve seen the film this quote always makes me smile.
2. You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how. – Gone With the Wind
Scarlett O’Hara was a spoiled plantation heiress who only had eyes for the handsome Ashley. Though he had feelings for Scarlett, he was engaged to Melanie and wanted to honor that commitment. This is when Rhett Butler entered Scarlett’s life. He was crazy about her, but she was always so blinded by Ashley that she never considered Rhett’s advances. Until he gave her a reason to. He sweeped her up in his arms and said, “You should be kissed and often, and by somehow who knows how” and then kisses her passionately. The look she gives him after clearly shows that Butler knew what he was doing. That kiss lead to Scarlett eventually forgetting about Ashley and vowing to win Rhett.
1. We’ll always have Paris. – Casablanca

Ilsa begs Rick for the papers, but breaks down and eventually tells him that she has never stopped loving him. She thought her husband had died when she met him, and only learned he was alive right before they were about to leave. She asks that Rick give her the papers to fly out of the country with her husband, but at the last minute she will stay behind with him and let her husband fly on without her. Rick agrees. However when the flight is about to take off he tells her to get on the plane. He reminds her how vital her husband is to the resistance and how much he’ll need her to keep going. She doesn’t want to leave Rick because she loves him, and even though he loves her, he knows it’s the right thing to do. Right before she gets on the plane he reminds her that they will always have Paris. They will always have that time together when they were in love and happy. It’s what she needs to hear to get on that plane. So even though these star crossed lovers don’t get their happy ending, they will always be happy in Paris.
